Seahawks Super Bowl Cake!

seahawkscake Living in Seattle has never been so much fun with the Hawks in SuperBowl XLVIII! So much excitement in the air with Super Bowl Sunday just two days away! I couldn’t help but want to make an awesome cake for Seahawks Super Bowl XLVIII. This Seahawks Super Bowl cake is made from scratch but I used store bought frosting & food coloring for the field & logo. Update: HAWKS WON!!! And the cake lived up to the event; it was “SUPER” tasty. I made it again for my husband’s birthday two days after the Super Bowl, but I used a football shaped cake pan (photo at bottom).

    Makes one 13 x 9 inch cake

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups white sugar
3/4 cup cocoa powder (natural brand preferred)
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1 cup strongly brewed coffee
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup vegetable oil (I used 1/4 vegetable and 1/4 coconut oil)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour 9×13 pan.
  2. In large bowl combine flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Make a well in the center.
  3. Add eggs, coffee, buttermilk, oil and vanilla. Beat for 2 minutes on medium speed. Batter will be thin. Pour into prepared pans.
  4. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 34 to 38 minutes, or until toothpick inserted into center of cake comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes, then remove from pan and finish cooling on a wire rack.
  5. Now for the decorative frosting! I simply used Betty Crocker’s Hershey’s Cookies and Cream flavored frosting. It is so good! It’s white so it was perfect for adding food coloring. The field was easy — just spread a neat layer of green frosting on top. Using a piping bag or simply a ziploc with the corner snipped, add the white lines and hash marks. Be sure to leave enough width between the parallel center hash marks for the Seahawks logo. If you want to create a legit Seahawks cake, then pay attention to detail when it comes to the logo! I held up a piece of paper to my computer screen and traced this logo (actual size): Screen shot 2014-01-31 at 10.40.04 PM

Next, cut it out along the outside of the white. Lay it down on the cake once the frosting has dried a bit then trace along the edge with a toothpick. Take off the paper logo and gently remove any white “yard lines” or hashes that might be intersecting the inside of the logo.  trace

Then cut out the inside colored parts. No particular rhyme or reason to my particular cutting..I just cut out the parts that made sense to me. Use common sense and logic…trace with a tooth pick. and fill in the blanks with appropriate colors!

And if you really want to show some spirit, you can paint your nails with the hawks logo! I used this gals video for instruction. But I just used a tooth pick as the “brush.”
