Honey Spice Snaps

honey spice snaps2Don’t let “snaps” deceive you; these cookies are soft and chewy! These are my BFF’s favorite cookie, and that is saying a lot because being the hardcore health nut she is, she still claims that cookies are her weakness. I got this recipe from her, and I think she got it from her mom. I made a few changes indicated by an * …. happy baking :)

    Makes just under 3 dozen cookies



  • 3.5 cups flour*
    *I used 3 cups all purpose flour + 1/4 cup wheat germ + 1/4 cup ground flaxseed meal
  • 2  1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1.5 tsp salt
  • 1.5 tsp ground ginger
  • 3/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 to 1/2 tsp cloves (judge to taste)
  • 1 cup + 2 Tbsp crisco*
    *I used a little less than 1 cup of coconut oil, not melted
  • 1.5 cups brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 egg + 1 yolk (don’t be lazy)

*The wheat germ and flaxseed add about 1g fiber and 2g protein to each cookie. Flaxseed also boasts omega 3 fatty acid. Coconut oil has numerous health benefits! Unlike butter & crisco.


Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Mix dry ingredients (#1-6) in bowl, set aside. Beat crisco OR coconut oil with brown sugar on high until smooth. Beat in honey then egg until just combined. Gradually add dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Form into balls of desired size, dip one end in water then in sugar so it sticks. Place on lined baking sheet 2 inches apart. Bake for 12 minutes (for average size cookies).
